      Conference on disaster risk reduction
      Switzerland is hosting the Fourth Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction from 19 to 23 May in Geneva. It is being chaired by Martin Dahinden, Director-General of the SDC. Some 2500 participants are attending the conference, which is organised by UNISDR, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction.

      First Arab rescue team with UN classification „heavy“
      Swiss support for Jordan’s search and rescue team
      Jordan’s Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team is the first in the Arab world to achieve the UN classification “heavy” – thanks in part to Switzerland. SDC has been supporting Jordan’s civil defence for six years with technical expertise and training.

      Development key to restoring stability
      More than one year since the food crisis and the capture of the Northern territories by insurgents, the situation in Mali remains critical. Nevertheless, the SDC is committed to seeing through its projects there to restore stability through development, while also aiding refugees.

      The rural populations in West Africa rarely have the means to invest in a water system. And yet small producers know that access to water would allow them to develop revenue-generating activities. In order to finance this type of installation in West Africa, the SDC has developed a pioneering project for microcredit.
