Development cooperation with the South

The SDC's bilateral development cooperation activities aim to lay the material and human foundations to enable its priority countries to carry out sustainable development processes on their own. These activities are thus considered to be of a long-term, subsidiary nature. In addition to its traditional project work, the SDC is increasingly devoting its efforts to country programs fostering favorable general conditions (e.g. in the judicial system, in government leadership and democracy, human rights, peace, security).

World Press Freedom Day, “Safe to Speak: Securing Freedom of Expression in All Media”
Between a rock and a hard place: the media in Afghanistan
The Afghan media has experienced an unparalleled boom: growing from one Taliban-run radio station in 2001 to more than 200 independent radio and TV stations today. Despite the thriving media diversity and new legislation, Afghan journalists are harassed from various sides. And the future of media diversity and press freedom after the 2014 foreign troop withdrawal is uncertain.

Horn of Africa
The SDC strengthens its commitment
Destabilised by conflicts, recurrent food crises, and the disruptions of climate change, the Horn of Africa is a highly vulnerable region. In keeping with the Federal Council's Message to Parliament on International Cooperation 2013–2016, Switzerland will be reinforcing its involvement there, focusing on the issues of food security, health, good governance and migration.

Focus of switzerland and cooperation strategy

Fragile states
Adapting and enhancing commitment
Approximately 1.5 billion human beings live in states which are fragile or affected by conflict. They number among the most disadvantaged populations on our planet. The complexity of the situation in which these people find themselves makes it necessary for development cooperation to modify and adapt its mode of action. The Message on Switzerland’s International Cooperation 2013-2016 plans to increase the aid provided to fragile or conflict-affected states.
