Earthquake in South Asia/Pakistan

On 8 October 2005, an earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter Scale struck the
region of Kashmir at a depth of around 10 km below the earth’s surface, resulting in at least 70,000 deaths in Pakistan, India and Afghanistan and at least the same number of injured. In Pakistan
alone around two million people are homeless.The situation in Pakistan is far more dramatic because it was at the epicentre of the earthquake. That is why Switzerland and international aid efforts are concentrating on this country.

Focus on reconstruction and earthquakepreparedness
SDC is cooperating with itspartnersin the earthquakezone in the reconstructionof schools, healthcare centres, and farms. In addition, they are promoting earthquake preparedness and earthquake-proof building methods.
